What is the Sculptural Coral Gene Bank?
Designed and built in Los Angeles over six months by our innovative partners, Counting Coral – a not-for-profit reef restoration organisation, this unique installation is submerged 18 feet underwater and spans 60 feet. Crafted entirely from marine-grade stainless steel—avoiding harmful materials like plastic or cement—it provides an ideal surface for coral attachment. Now nurturing over 500 corals (as of February 2025), it is a living genetic repository that safeguards and encourages the natural growth of Vomo Island’s reefs.
Why is it Essential?
Coral regeneration is a slow process, so our partnership with Counting Coral and supporting a long-term strategy is crucial. The Gene Bank is not just an art piece—it’s a key part of a broader initiative that includes coral out-planting, reef restoration, educational programs, sustainable practices, and eco-friendly innovations within the resort community. By strengthening local and governmental partnerships (with blessings from a traditional SevuSevu ceremony and official support from Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister), this project demonstrates our commitment to authentic action toward worthwhile environmental initiatives.
