VOMO Prepares to Out-Plant its Nursery-Grown Coral
The next chapter of VOMO’s coral restoration journey is taking shape beneath the waters surrounding the island.
This September, a representative from Counting Coral joined our team at VOMO to provide hands-on training in out-planting — the process of returning healthy, grown coral from our nursery to the reef. The visit also included surveys of the surrounding reef to identify areas where coral is struggling and where future restoration efforts can have the greatest impact.
This work builds on VOMO’s Counting Coral Sculptural Gene Bank, established in 2024 as an underwater nursery for cultivating and propagating resilient coral species. The nursery currently holds more than 1,000 coral fragments in active growth, with an ambition to grow more than 10,000 new fragments over the next five years.
The first major out-planting project is planned for early 2027. This will be an important milestone for the program — completing the first full cycle from growing coral in the nursery through to returning it to the reef.
VOMO is also proud to see interest in the program growing beyond our own shores. We have welcomed visitors from other resort islands to learn from our experience and see first-hand how coral propagation and restoration can become part of responsible island stewardship.
For our guests, the reef restoration program offers an opportunity to look beneath the surface of island life — and understand the work taking place to help protect the waters that make Fiji so special.
The reef is growing. And so is the story.
