Worthwhile results: 4400 kg of food waste diverted monthly 18.4 tonnes of CO2 diverted from the atmosphere monthly Equivalent to planting 300 trees in terms of environmental impact
The data is in. Our Bio Digester is hungry to impress.
It’s been just over a year since we implemented the Power Knot LFC-300 biodigester, and the data is impressive.
Our private island resort provides an exclusive and tranquil escape for travellers. However, our remote location presented significant sustainability challenges. We aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, cut high waste management costs, and streamline the logistical difficulties of shipping waste off the island thrice weekly.
Five years ago, we began an exhaustive search for an effective food waste management system that could address our unique needs. After evaluating various options, we selected Power Knot’s LFC-300 biodigester. The machine’s capacity options and Power Knot’s responsive communication influenced the decision.
In June 2023, we successfully installed the LFC-300 biodigester in our waste processing plant.
How it works…
Food waste is collected from our two restaurants and staff canteen, which serve 300-400 people three meals a day. The waste is then stored in a cold room before being fed into the biodigester. The biodigester processes up to 900 kg of food waste daily, transforming it into a liquid that feeds into our septic system. This recycled waste helps nurture our golf course greenery.
Impressive Data
- 4400 kg of food waste diverted monthly
- 18.4 tonnes of CO2 diverted from the atmosphere monthly
- Equivalent to planting 300 trees in terms of environmental impact
The impact of this system has been remarkable. We now process up to 4400 kg (9700 lbs) of food waste monthly, diverting 18.4 tonnes of CO2e from the atmosphere. This environmental effort is equivalent to preventing greenhouse gas emissions from driving 75,700 km (47,000 miles) or planting over 300 trees. By processing food waste on-site, we have significantly reduced our carbon footprint and saved on the costs associated with shipping waste off the island.
As the first in Fiji to implement such advanced waste-handling methods, we hope to inspire other businesses to follow suit.
Our Director of Operations, Michael Fosbender, shares his enthusiasm for the biodigester: “I highly recommend the LFC biodigester to anyone else. It’s a game changer, and I have been pushing for this for a long time. It does exactly what we need it to do: reduce costs and eliminate food waste.”
VOMO is working hard to prove that luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand, ensuring that our paradise remains a beautiful and thriving destination for generations.
