Earth day inspiring the next generation of marine biologists

Celebrating Earth Day 2024 at Vomo Island Fiji. Combating Plastic Pollution Together and inspiring the next generation

This Earth Day, Vomo Island Fiji embraces the global theme of “Planet Vs. Plastics” with impactful environmental initiatives highlighting our commitment to sustainability and conservation. As part of our ongoing efforts to protect and preserve the natural beauty of our island and the world beyond, we’re excited to share how we’re making fundamental changes that inspire our guests and staff.

Inspiring Young Conservationists. Laisenia’s Story

At the heart of our Earth Day celebration is Laisenia, our dedicated marine biologist whose passion for the ocean is infectious. Laisenia has become a hero to many young visitors at our kids’ club, where he teaches the importance of marine life. Laisenia has inspired a new generation of environmental stewards through his engaging turtle conservation lessons.

“I want to be like Laisenia and save the turtles!”  Many kids leave VOMO with dreams of becoming a marine biologist. It is testament to the impact of Laisenia’s environmental teachings. This Earth Day, we’re showcasing stories like Laisenia’s to highlight the ripple effect of education and passion for nature.

Tackling Plastic Pollution. Our Water Bottling Plant

Our on-site water bottling plant is a cornerstone of our fight against plastic pollution. By bottling our own water, we significantly reduce the reliance on disposable plastic bottles, which significantly contribute to oceanic and terrestrial pollution. Our state-of-the-art facility ensures that every guest has access to fresh, clean water without the environmental cost of plastic waste.

This initiative supports our Earth Day theme and represents our broader commitment to sustainable practices across all operations on Vomo Island.

Community Action on Earth Day. Our Guest Beach Cleanup and More

Fiji community spirit is vital as we come together for an island-wide beach cleanup. Guests and staff join forces today to remove plastics and other debris from our shores, turning our collective action into a fun and impactful competition.

After the cleanup, our Environment Team, led by Laisenia and Wise, will discuss the impacts of plastic pollution on our marine ecosystems. This educational talk will be followed by a series of enjoyable games for all participants, reinforcing our message that environmental responsibility is everyone’s responsibility.

Please. No more plastics harming our coral reefs.

Coral reefs are particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of plastic pollution. Microplasticscan be especially destructive. These particles are often ingested by marine life and can inhibit coral growth and reproduction, leading to decreased reef resilience and increased vulnerability to disease. By addressing plastic pollution through our initiatives and also our new sculptural coral gene bank initiative, we are taking critical steps to protect these precious marine habitats from further damage.

It takes a Fiji Village…

This Earth Day, we invite you to read more about our environmental initiatives and join us in making a difference.
