Events for Earth Day 2023 – The VOMO “Clean Sweep” Beach Clean Up Day
Vomo Island Fiji’s “Clean Sweep” Earth Day Event on the Friday, 21st of April, 2023. All guests welcome!
The event is to commemorate Earth Day on April 22, 2023 and aims to raise awareness about the growing problem of plastics in our oceans and to encourage people to take action to reduce their impact on the environment.
Despite being situated in the middle of the South Pacific, even the pristine beaches of Vomo Island are not immune to the scourge of plastic pollution. Every year, plastic waste is washed up on our shores, threatening our marine ecosystems and the health and wellbeing of our local wildlife.
To combat this growing problem, Vomo Island Fiji regularly holds clean-up days where staff members are encouraged to help keep the island free from plastics and ensure that they are not washed back out to sea. These efforts have been successful in keeping our beaches relatively clean, but more needs to be done to tackle the root causes of plastic pollution.
The VOMO “Clean Sweep” Beach Clean Up Day event is a fantastic opportunity for guests to get involved and help protect our island home from the devastating impact of plastic waste. We encourage all guests to join us and be a part of this important effort to protect our environment.
On the day of the event, participants will be provided with gloves and bags to collect and dispose of plastic waste. The event will be led by our experienced team members who will guide participants on how to identify and collect plastic waste, as well as educating them on the dangers of plastic pollution to our oceans.
This event is not just about cleaning up our beaches. It’s about raising awareness and inspiring action to reduce our dependence on single-use plastics and to promote more sustainable living practices. By taking part in this event, guests will be contributing to a global movement to protect our planet from the devastating effects of plastic pollution.
For those who have just arrived on the island, it’s not too late to get involved. We encourage all guests to come along and participate in the VOMO “Clean Sweep” Beach Clean Up Day. It’s a great way to meet new people, learn about the local environment, and make a positive contribution to our island home.
We believe that events like this are essential to raise awareness about the growing problem of plastic pollution and inspire people to take action to protect our environment.

Ongoing events through 2023:
- Educating our Yungstas and Club V kids clubs on how to look after the environment
- Turtle conservation programme
- Promoting our water bottling plant
- Promoting eco-friendly purchases in our boutique such as our Rocks Push shorts made out of 5 recycled PET bottles.
- Through our e-water plant we have been able to save purchasing and using over 65,000 litres of chemical cleaning agents since last Earth Day!
- Purchasing a Biodigester machine which will be able to process 900 kilos of food waste every day and turn it into liquid fertiliser
- Bringing a Marine Biologist onto our team who is creating initiatives to educate our guests and staff on our house reefs and implement coral planting and creating fish houses to encourage more aquatic life to our island surroundings. Having the Marine Biologist has also allowed us to care for injured and baby turtles when they hatch to ensure they have a better chance of survival. We have purpose built turtle ponds to now care for these creatures.
Investing in our island home…
Our stunning island is surrounded by pristine ocean waters and ocean life.
After much research, the VOMO family have made it our quest to do our part to right the wrongs of plastic pollution which is now, alarmingly, recognised as a hazard to public health and the human body due to microplastics being found in the food we eat.
Not to mention the devastating effects plastics have on our marine life.
In addition, we have focused specifically on reducing our chemical use (which in itself reduces plastic container procurement) in our kitchens and beyond through the implementation of a brilliant and revolutionary commercial cleaning alternative called E-Water.
We are also reducing and refusing to use non-biodegradable and harmful materials, and we are also changing how we deal with waste and tightening our waste management practices in general.
Energy consumption is also a strong focus.
